If you glue a length of molding cross-grain
to the surface of a solid-wood panel, such as
the side of a case, wood movement of the
panel will eventually cause the molding to
pop loose or, worse, split the case. Instead of
gluing the molding along its full length, it’s
best to apply glue to only 3 in. of the molding
at the front of the case side to keep it
tight at the miter joint. At the back of the
case, you have several options for attaching
the molding. The easiest method is to use a
small finish nail to secure the molding to the
rear of the case side. If you set the nail head
and putty over the hole, the connection
becomes almost invisible. Other options
include screwing through a slotted hole
inside the case and routing a dovetailed slot
in the back of the molding and joining the
molding with a matching dovetailed key
screwed to the case.
