Spanish term

cada vez se unía más gente: hombres, mujeres, niños y ancianos

Spanish to English Social Sciences Government / Politics Colombian History
Afternoon. This is from a book I’m translating about the history of violence and lack of justice in Colombia. This passage describes the jubilation the author and his friends felt the day the dictatorship of General Gustavo Rojas Pinilla was overthrown (May 10, 1957).

The original sentence structure is giving me brain ache, and I can’t seem to come up with anything decent in English, so could use some suggestions.

Context:

“Ese día fue glorioso para el País, salimos temprano a organizar las marchas del triunfo. La toma de la Bastilla en la Revolución Francesa, la considerábamos un juego de nenes. Ese día estábamos construyendo la historia más grande de la humanidad, al menos así lo considerábamos los protagonistas del momento. Recorríamos triunfantes las calles y avenidas principales de la ciudad y cada vez se unía más gente: hombres, mujeres, niños y ancianos.”

“[…] We marched triumphantly through the streets and main avenues of the city, and…”

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Esmeralda Gómez

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

more and more people gathered: men, women, children and elderly people

One option
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : This implies that elderly people are a separate category from men and women.

joined by ever more people: men, women, young and old

An option, aiming for brevity. Converts the whole phrase about the people joining in, into an adverbial clause...

Example sentence:

We marched triumphantly down the main streets and avenues of the city, joined by ever more people: men, women, young and old...

Peer comment(s):

agree Tatty : Brevity is good, otherwise the sentence is lopsided. marched down...joined by more and more people:...

as more and more people joined the burgeoning crowd: men, women, young, and old:

'Men, women, young, and old' is a rather recognizable fixed expression in English; it sounds a little 'foreign' to paraphrase it when it's so common. Examples:

Also, I think it's "heavy" to introduce a new clause when a phrase would do.
