But I would add that it is up to the person and the expression he/her wants to used. Most anything that implied hard work, effort, putting yourself into accomplishing something would do.

I'm guessing it's from "remar" (to row) and means something like he really has to "work on it" to get the girl to react, as rowing can be really hard work...
