குரு உபதேசித்து ஆன உடனே

Tamil to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy Learning and Teaching Tamil
Greetings,

I am currently going through “A Tamil Prose Reading Book” by George Uglow Pope. Fortunately, the story I am currently reading can be found here:
http://hindudharmaforums.com/showthread.php?8884-chitrAnnam-...

My question is about the first part of the sentence குரு உபதேசித்து ஆன உடனே, "சீஷா எல்லாம் நுழைந்ததா?" என்றான். What do you think would be the best translation, please? The web page has, “Soon after (the guru) finished his teaching,” but doesn't உடனே mean “immediately”?

Also, why is ஆன used here? What does it add to the meaning? Why not simply “உபதேசித்த உடனே”?

Best wishes

Simon

Immediately after completing the teaching

Here "ஆன" means complete, குரு உபதேசித்து ஆன உடனே = குரு உபதேசித்து முடித்த உடனே
Example sentence:

சமையல் ஆன பிறகு பரிமாறலாம் - Serving can be done after completion cooking.

After the teacher finished the teaching

ஆன உடனே: Though one is tempted to attribute the meaning "immediately" to the word "உடனே" when it is preceded by "ஆன" it generally means "afterwords". So here it means that " after the teacher finished his teaching". It is something like this. You can say "after the class, come home". The same thing you can also say as "after the class is over come home" In all probability "ஆன" gives the same effect as "over" in the above example. It is perfectly right to say "குரு உபதேசித்த உடனே". But adding " "ஆன" to "உடனே", makes it emphatic
Example sentence:

உணவு உண்ட உடனே படுத்துக் கொள்ளக் கூடாது.

உணவு உண்டு ஆன உடனே படுத்துக் கொள்ளக் கூடாது

Upon completion of teaching, the Guru asked, "Disciple, is everything understood?"

"Immediately" is an ADVERB, and is not used in the beginning of a sentence, in general. According to English grammar, if you want to have the adverb at the beginning rather the end of a sentence, it must be placed before the main verb but after auxiliary verbs.

'Soon after', 'Upon' are used at the beginning and end of a sentence. Both are best fits in this context.

Emphasis

People used such words when speaking and writing before. Such use is still can be seen in some areas, especially in southern Sri Lanka.

However, the word ஆன is used to emphasize.

உதாரணமாக,
1. வீட்டு வேலையைச் செய்தான உடனே நீ உறங்கலாம்.
2. பாட வேளை முடிந்து ஆன உடனே நீங்கள் வீட்டுக்குப் போகலாம்.
3. பயணம் புறப்பட்டு வந்து ஆன உடனே அவன் குளிக்கப் போய் விட்டான்
