Russian term

исходная универсальная целостность

Russian to English Social Sciences Psychology philosophy
From a book on "activity theory":

Работы Гегеля и Маркса утвердили рядом с традиционным пониманием деятельности другое, на наш взгляд, более глубокое. Согласно ему, человеческая социальная деятельность должна рассматриваться не как атрибут отдельного человека, а как **исходная универсальная целостность,** значительно более широкая, чем он сам. Не отдельные индивиды тогда создают и производят деятельность, а наоборот, она сама "захватывает" их и заставляет вести себя определенным образом.

primary/original universal integrity?

Doesn't make much sense to me.

Thanks in advance.

passage is actually a quote from Shchedrovitskiy Sorry, I failed to note this, for all you Shchedrovitskiy experts out there.

This one uses "basic universal integrity":

Boris Shapiro Nov 28, 2020:
Totality does, indeed, seem to be the name of the game. My dad (who is a old-school psychologist of Soviet extraction) confirms that "целостность" is very much a term. Possibly a direct translation of the German (because Marxism, duh!) term 'Ganzheit' which, in turn, is usually translated into English as 'totality' or 'wholeness'.
Frank Szmulowicz, Ph. D. Nov 28, 2020:
I looked at several Hegelian texts and could not find much beyond universal totality. It is not clear whether it is original or primal or whatever.

initial universal integrity

Apparently, the answer to the question asked above is more complicated than it seems to be. Parallel with conventional viewpoints, another, more profound perception of what is activity has been established. According to the latter, the human activity should be treated not as an attribute of individual, but as an initial universal integrity, which is more comprehensive than “individuals” themselves: “activity is not initiated and produced by the individuals; on the contrary, it involves them, and force them to behave in a certain manner”

neutral IrinaN : Sorry, Frank but it does not make much sense indeed. Your link is a literate and overall pretty poor non-native translation that Susan apparently is trying to avoid.

Don't shoot the messenger. This is what the Russian authors of the original thought the English translation ought to be.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I think with "basic" (and without "totality") it makes more sense. Thanks for your research, Frank. Thanks to the others, too."

basic yet universal holism

I think some conjunction is required between 'basic' and 'universal' to make it sound more natural in English.

Google gave me quite a few hits on "basic yet universal" and "universal holism", the latter exclusively in texts on psychology.
