Definition from
TermCord IATE:
"A regulation from the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs to regulate remote working. EU Parliament calls for:
Employers should not require workers to be available outside their working time and co-workers should refrain from contacting colleagues for work purposes.
EU countries should ensure that workers who invoke their right to disconnect are protected from victimisation and other repercussions and that there are mechanisms in place to deal with complaints or breaches of the right to disconnect.
Remote professional learning and training activities must be counted as work activity and must not take place during overtime or days off without adequate compensation."
Example sentences:
Staying connected round the clock has started taking a toll on workers. Research findings show that after months of homeworking, employees are now showing signs of fatigue, burnout, depression and health disorders. The boundary between work and home life has become blurred, leading to excessive encroachment in people’s private lives. Employees are baffled with a ‘stream of pings’ overtaking their personal space. This has brought to the fore demands related to the right to disconnect. (The Wire)
Finding the right balance won’t be easy, especially as some people prefer to work flexible hours and find it doesn’t impact their work-life balance. “I would say, the law in creating a right to disconnect could help but it won't be effective if people do not have the discipline,” Malanda said. Training will be key to ensuring any future right is protected, as will monitoring. (Delano)
Labour MEP Alex Agius Saliba’s report on the right to disconnect comes at the tapering of the shock pandemic that changed lives in 2020 and sent everyone ‘home’. Now working from home, flexi- and telework makes the always-on culture a fact of life. (Malta Today)

Definition from
