pull manchette

français vers anglais Marketing Textiles / vêtements / mode
I'm currently translating product descriptions for a (teenage/young women) fashion brand and have come across this item that I don't know how to describe in English. I don't have a photo but I'm assuming it's a sort of jumper with just sleeves and polo neck, which, in this case, also has a camisole-style jumper underneath (it's described as a '2-en-1' item). Any idea what to call it in English?

Discussion

Philippa Smith Aug 16, 2021:
@Phil It can mean sleeve. And the names given to clothing items aren't always literal. And the "2-in-1" description Anne provides fits with this new style trend - which fits too with the brand's target audience.
Anne McDowall (asker) Aug 16, 2021:
@philgoddard I'm pretty certain that my assumption is correct. The garment is entitled 'Pull manchettes 2 en 1' and is described as follows: 'Pull noir, manchettes, col montant, manches longues, finitions à volants, maille côtelée, débardeur, maille côtelée, bretelles.' In this case, I think this does mean sleeves, in other words, it's like a very cropped jumper, with just the neck and sleeves. The other part of it is a sort of vest top with thin straps. I'm just wondering whether anyone has come across the name for this sort of thing in English. If not, I'll get round the problem but calling it simply a '2-in-1 jumper' and describing it as follows: 'Black 2-in-1 ribbed jumper: cropped jumper with high neck, long sleeves and frilled edging; integrated ribbed strappy top.'
philgoddard Aug 16, 2021:
Manchette means cuff So presumably it's 'cuffed pullover', though I would have thought all pullovers have cuffs. You may not be correct in your assumptions about what it looks like.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I'd just add a hyphen, but otherwise, this seems to me to provide the best description of the item and, as the references Bokani provided show, it seems to be a commonly used term for this sort of garment. Thanks!"

sweater sleeve

Apparently. Tons of hits, tons of photos of what almost feels like an emperor's-new-clothes trend. ;-)

I agree, "sweater sleeve" sounds weird, tho' it does seem to be used a lot. How about going with "super cropped sweater/jumper" instead? Plenty of good hits and it sounds more logical.
Note from asker:
Yes, this is the sort of link I found (but couldn't work out how to post!) But clearly, the writer of this article didn't know what to call it either. I don't like 'sweater sleeve': it's a sweater (of sorts) not a sleeve!
I think I'll leave title as simply '2-in-1 jumper' for now, but good idea to add 'super' to cropped in description!
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : Not sure about this - manchette doesn't mean sleeve, and you need French references.

I've added a link to an image from a French site. The description Anne has fits this new jumper style perfectly.

so just : cropped pullover
Note from asker:
Thanks for your contribution, Verginia, but this implies that the cami top is cropped whereas this part may not be.

sweater with cuff

Manchette can be translated with cuff or bracelet, I find the former more relevant.

arm warmer, - sweater

If this is describing the type of article that was the subject of a fair ol' bit of hype that arose Zara's arm warmer sweater a year or two ago, then this suggestion may work quite well.

It was also described as a "turtleneck scarf". https://www.insider.com/zara-turtleneck-sleeves-shirt-viral-...
