To Whom It May Concern:
I am pleased to write a letter of reference for Mrs. Maria Heffernan, a German Language teacher at Cheyenne Mountain Junior High, where we had the opportunity to enroll our son to her 8th Grade Intermediate class.
As parents of a child who previously spent 4 years in a German speaking country, we felt very fortunate that our son will continue his German lessons at a high level, by having a native language speaker as a teacher. I had the opportunity to meet Mrs. Heffernan several times during the school year, where I witnessed her having a great working relationship with both her students, and their parents. I have asked my son, Maxim, to describe his experience having Mrs. Heffernan as a teacher, and this is what he wrote:
“ Frau Heffernan has utilized a perfect balance of pushing students to their limits while not drowning them in work, neither at home nor in the classroom. She also radiates a sense of encouragement and confidence that is unrivaled by other teachers.
Other parents have described Frau Heffernan of “putting her students first”, which is a rare and meritable skill to have. She shows this trait whenever she shows support for a student who is feeling down, or falling behind academically. If a student shows a lack of confidence or enthusiasm, Frau Heffernan would connect with the student while showing compassion and care. These actions guarantee that every student would leave her classroom happy and with high-spirits.
Frau Heffernan, besides being compassionate and caring, also has the ability to teach students who are new to the language while teaching students with more advanced knowledge, such as myself. I enrolled in her classroom with the intention of not forgetting the language but came out of the classroom having learned more than ever.
Finally, Frau Heffernan mastered the ability to transcend the language barrier between her teaching and her students. Frau Heffernan speaks to her students in German and only speaks in English for explanations and questions. Her constant speaking of her native language has given the students a sense of familiarity and confidence in their ability. Her teaching methods are also unique, by having a neat balance of teaching through a textbook, various movies and videos, sharing her own knowledge and experiences, and her well-designed group projects.”
As a dedicated, caring, skilled teacher, I believe she possesses many of the qualities that will make her a very successful addition to your school community.
