Italian term or phrase: foto raddrizzamento
Sorry for this endless stream of questions..... I am so grateful for any expert assistance! Same text as in previous question: working group have done a series of physical and chemical analyses on building materials etc to decide how and where to direct renovation efforts and now

"I dati raccolti sono stati riferiti alle tavole dei rilievi eseguiti (rilievo geometrico, rilievo dei materiali, rilievo
delle condizioni di degrado, *foto-raddrizzamenti*)"

In Italian there appear to be plenty of 'fotoraddrizzamenti' and even a tutorial on fotoraddrizzamento prospettico, but all I can find in English are a few references to 'straightening' photographs.....but not as if it were a technique, just as if talking about straightening one's hair (!). There must be a more technical way of saying this.....?

(digital) image rectification
Explanation:
'Raddrizzamento digitale applicato al rilievo di beni culturali
The present technique of digital image processing follows the concept of analytical rectification, allowing for the elimination of the geometric distortions from the original image and the retrieval of the correct dimensional information. The image can be produced in various ways: most often, sampling is done with a scanner, but recently a new method is becoming more frequently used, that is the acquisition of digital images directly on ground by means of digital cameras with a CCD image sensor. The processing software is now offered by various producers of photogrammetric equipment, which allows us to carry out surveys of manufactured flat items, starting from a single image, to create a vector graphics superimposed in CAD environment'

'Image rectification is a transformation process used to project two-or-more images onto a common image plane. It corrects image distortion by transforming the image into a standard coordinate system.'

'PhoToPlan is our well-known software for true-to-scale digital image rectification of plane objects. The software works inside the familiar AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT environments.
The result is a versatile image plan, which allows for easy measurement of areas and distances. The image plan connects photographic documentation of existing conditions with exact geometrical information. Rectified images can be used to draw plans of façades or acquire geometrical data of ceilings and wall frescos.
Using traditional CAD commands and/or PhoToPlan tools, accurate dimensions are pulled from the photo instantly and digitizing is a snap.'

'PhoToPlan è il software per il raddrizzamento fotografico delle superfici piane a partire dalle immagini digitali importate direttamente in AutoCAD / AutoCAD LT.
Il risultato è un’immagine piana che può essere impiegata per la vettorializzazione in CAD, misurare distanze ed aree. Sull’immagine raddrizzata possono essere indicate le informazioni geometriche esatte, eseguire le mappature dei materiali, delle patologie di degrado e degli interventi manutentivi.'

Phil,

'Image rectification is the process of taking a perspective image and altering by ways of a perspective matrix to a rectangle or square.'
(http://edwardkim.net/blog.php?page=Image Rectification)

'Rectified photography provides a cost effective method for recording a high level of detail on relatively flat structures and objects such as building facades, floors, stained glass windows and wall paintings. It can be used to produce a highly versatile ‘drawing’ which can be taken on site and easily annotated, read and understood by the many different specialists involved in building conservation. By its very nature it provides a detailed photographic record of the subject at a point in time. The resulting images are also often impressive and can be used for publicity and fund-raising. It must, however, be remembered that the technique is only really effective for relatively flat structures and objects. If a similar image is needed of, for example a vault or 3D line work, more complex techniques such as orthophotography and traditional photogrammetric stereo plotting can be used.

WHAT IS RECTIFIED PHOTOGRAPHY?
In its most basic form it is a photograph ‘with the image plane of the camera approximately parallel to the principal plane of the object and then printed to scale’ (Bryan et al 2007). In other words the effects of distortion by perspective are removed and the image scaled upon one or more principal planes of the subject. [...]
To some degree, every photograph contains distortions: most obviously perspective and barrel distortion. Some of these can be removed by the use of high quality ‘shifted’ lenses. Each picture should be taken square on to the subject and if possible the effects of perspective removed by shifting the lens accordingly.'

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks to both Barbara and Phil (again!). I think you are right, B, about it not being 'photogrammetry', which I have found extensively elsewhere.

neutral  philgoddard: I think the correct answer is photogrammetry. I only arrived at this by reading your excellent references, so it seems a bit mean to post a separate answer. What do you think? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photogrammetry

-> If the author had intended photogrammetry, he would have used that term, don't you think? This is more specific. If photogrammetry 'makes measurements from photographs' (www.photogrammetry.com/) image rectification 'corrects image distortion' (see above).
