Even though we could discuss these occasions after they happened, he could never understand what had gone wrong and simply explained that his wife had "gone off the deep end" or his business partner had proved to be a "complete arsehole".
This expression appears several times in the paper I am translating. I understand its meaning, but I am looking for a Spanish equivalent (ideally a phrase, not just one word).

I know you asked for expressions, rather than a single word, but since this was my immediate reaction I thought it worth while mentioning it for the record. What the man does is to provoke what seems to be a over the top reaction to some minor point (but which may actually be a reaction to an accumulation of things). A bit like overloading an electrical circuit until the fuses eventually blow - this picture fits in with saltar! Hope this of some use.
