English term

probate

English to Spanish Law/Patents Law (general)
I have a list of ‘events’ that occur in people’s lives, in the context of an on-line genealogy software:

Items in the list include:

Birth
Baptism
Will
Death
Burial
Probate
etc

where ‘probate’ is the legal process of proving the validity of a will.

My Spanish dictionaries only give long-winded explanations, such as 'verificación oficial de los testamentos' (Collins eng/esp), not short one-word translations (two words at most) that will fit in a drop-down menu on the website.

Target: Southern Cone + Spain

I don’t necessarily need an exact translation – a short phrase that could be construed as implying ‘probate’ or equivalent/similar acts in South American jurisdictions would be an acceptable alternative, since this website is primarily for genealogists, not lawyers.

sucesión testamentaria

'Sucesión' refers to the process whereby legal title of the estate of a deceased person is transferred to its heirs, whether there is a will or not. 'Sucesión testamentaria' is used when there is a will, and 'sucesión intestada or ab intestato' when there is not.

Also, I understand that, although techincally speaking your definition is correct, the term probate is also used when a person dies without a will. Do a google search for 'probate without a will'. In this sense, if you are looking for a one word translation, 'sucesión' will work just fine (at least in my opinion)

Hope this helps.
