Particulate matter is a term used to describe dispersed air-borne solid and liquid particles larger than single molecules (approximately 0.0002m in diameter) but smaller than 500m. Particulate matter can be divided according to its size. Fine particles are less than 2.5m in diameter, coarse particles are above 2.5m. Other terms commonly used to describe particulate matter include fumes, smoke, mist and fog.
