German term

totbellen

German to English Other Livestock / Animal Husbandry hunting dogs
I found this word in a 1910 manual for training military dogs. It has a drawing of a dog barking at the side of a soldier who appears dead. The caption is simply "Totbellend."

Modern German sources indicate it's a bark that a hunting dog makes when it finds game that already dead -- as opposed to living game.

Is there a word for it in English?

Thanks, in advance, for your help!

dead-game baying

Totverbellen ist das Lautgeben des Hundes, wenn er ein verendetes Stück Schalenwild gefunden hat (er „ruft“ zum Stück).

This is of course, not the typical yif yif as on hare track, but rather a deep bark. Similar, but at higher frequency as done during totverbellen "dead game baying".

right - the caption would have to be translated differently. My suggestion was in response to the Asker's question: Is there a word in English for "totbellen?"
Something went wrong...
