Portuguese to English: OSRAM gathers global marketing team to align its strategy in relation to the ban on incandescents in Brazil General field: Bus/Financial Detailed field: Advertising / Public Relations

Solutions for the consumers and the necessities of the local market were discussed during the workshop that took place in Osasco/SP.
The principal leaders of OSRAM’s world marketing team were meeting in the Brazilian unit of the company, in Osasco –SP, to align the principal strategies and actions related to the ban on incandescents in Brazil. The deadline for the traditional light bulbs to be taken out of the market is not due until 2016, but a few power hungry sets have already been taken off the shelves.
Named the LATAM Workshop, the event gathered around 20 professionals from the United States, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Peru, who, in addition to the presentations in Osram’s Light Studio, also visited selling outlets and exchanged experiences in the marketing trade. It was an opportunity for each professional to share the successful strategies that have been applied in countries where the ban has already happened, as well as which actions can and should be adapted to the local market.
According to Tracie Kacmarcik, Head of Marketing at Osram, Sylvania, in the United States where the ban has already been implemented, the Brazilian market is the biggest in South America and for this motive, is very important for the company. “Generally speaking, it has big consumer potential. For example, just in São Paulo, there are 12 million people and everyone needs lighting. In addition to this, various works and new construction projects are taking place all over the country.”
Over the removal of incandescents from selling points, the businessman states that it is most important to understand the market in order to better speak to consumers and clients, because OSRAM aims to help and to clarify which are the best solutions for each situation.
“Before, during and after the ban implementation in the United States, we emphasized LED’s and halogens as substitutes. As the second largest lighting company in the world, we did not simply want to offer technologies, but rather choices. Not everyone is ready for LED’s, which are excellent options and we consider the lighting of the future, but halogens are also efficient options, as are fluorescents,” he states.
As for the cost of the LED lamps in Brazil, Tracie asserts that OSRAM is investing to increase its portfolio and that each year, the technology continues to become more popular. “ The price of LED’s here is still very high, but we are already in a price dropping process and the next generations of LED lamps will be cheaper.”
In addition to this, there were presentations on which lighting technologies OSRAM could offer its consumers all over the world.

Translation - English The Niche Concept
One of the first researchers to define the niche was Hutchinson1 who, in 1957, conceptualised a niche as a way of describing the activities of any species in any dimension (physical, biological and chemical), of the environment. As these dimensions have various components, we can say that the niche is n dimensional. However, as everyone knows, we are only able to see three dimensions, thus this concept is abstract. Even so we are able to work mathematically and statistically, demonstrating the results with graphical representations in three or less dimensions.
The niche of every species occupies a part of the n dimensional volume that represents the total resources and space available for the community of which that species is part. Hutchinson even stated that we could describe the limits to activity of each species in a community along each of the dimensions of its environment, because they are part of the niche of other species, the relationships between it and others can be described. It is through this method that according to Ricklefs2, would be the best way of understanding the patterns observed in the structures of the communities. ¬¬¬
Another concept for a niche, cited by Pinto-Coelho, would be that the structure of the community reflects the adaptations of the species that are results of the selective processes coordinated by coexisting ones. The concept of a niche covers all of these relationships, for a specie’s ecological niche should show the relationship of the individual with all the aspects of its habitat.
A simpler way of understanding these concepts is to relate the physical and chemical requirements of the organism as being an address in the middle and the relationships of the organism with others as being its profession in the community.
