I read the forum about SDL TRADOS posted by Lilian Boland. My question is: If you are new in this business and you have to buy software which one you should have or if more than one what combination you should have. Thanks

You mean, for your own use? I am a bit confused because you say that you are new to the business whereas your profile page states 30 years of experience.

I always check out the résumé in addition to the profile page. In her case she counted "30" as the number of years in her industry of specialisation (though she probably did some translation on the side as well), and not as the number of years experience as a full-time translator.

With your background I guess you'd be doing medical and pharmaceutical translation. There is a lot of repetition in those types of texts, and the ability to effectively search your old translations is vital. So using a CAT tool e.g. Trados would be of great benefit to you. If you're computer savvy, you can use something like OmegaT, which is totally free.
Unfortunately half of my medical clients require Trados 2007, and half of them require Wordfast Pro. That means that I can't use OmegaT for those clients unless I do a lot of roundtripping.
Fortunately, Trados 2007 files can be handled in the latest version of Trados, as long as the client processes the files for you. And fortunately, if you're not willing to buy Wordfast yet, you can use the free online system Wordfast Anywhere to translate its files. Also, I think Wordfast Pro has a generous demo version that allows you to use it without paying for it, if you deal with small to mean sized files only (less than 1000 sentences per file).
The problem is that all of these systems work in different ways, so if you move from one system to the other, you need to relearn a lot.

Yes I have been a nurse for 30 years; in my practice and because I work in a big trauma center I have the opportunity to do translations and interpretations with patients, lawyers and physicians. However I always use Words and Google Translate without any problem. Lately I had some offers to translate other subjects but everybody ask me if I have TRADOS or other CAT tool, which I don't.

Once SDL sent me an interesting questionnaire, a page on their web site, which would calculate how long it would take for Trados to pay for itself in my specific case. I answered all those questions as honestly and accurately as I could, and got the amazing answer: 13 years!!! (and yet, that failed to include the expensive and "compulsory" yearly upgrades/updates).
SDL said it. It's not just my opinion.
