English term or phrase: fispoison and fishfuddle

Hello Proz community,

I am translating a text about a natural herb called Jamaican dogwood. When describing the background of this herb, it says " Jamaican dogwood is also called fispoison and fishfuddle because of its traditional use in slowing fish in order to make them easier to catch."

Does somebody know what fispoison and fishfuddle mean?

No quieren decir nada en especial, solamente son nombres alternativos de la planta en inglés que, desafortunadamente, no tienen un equivalente directo en español. Si la información es realmente necesaria, se puede añadir una nota del traductor.

A veces también se escribe "habín" o "habin".

Haría algo así:

"En inglés, también se conoce al jabín como fishpoison o fishfuddle ("veneno para peces") en referencia a su uso tradicional para entumecer a los peces para que sean más fáciles de atrapar.".

Traducirlo tal cual, sin especificar que son nombres que se utilizan en inglés, sería incorrecto, ya que en español no se utilizan estos nombres para referirse a la planta.
