Asker: hmmm sounds good actually..here's the full sentence in case u're interested: "..el niño hablaba de manera rudimentaria y apenas inteligible y Marta tenía que tantearlo y traducirlo, las madres como primeras tanteadoras y traductoras del mundo, que interpretan y luego formulan lo que ni siquiera es lengua, también los gestos y aspavientos y los diferentes significados del llanto, cuando el llanto es inarticulado y no equivale a palabras, o las excluye, o las traba".

Asker: Gracias silviantonia. Es un fragmento de una novela del magnífico escritor Javier Marías, y la novela se llama 'Mañana en la batalla piensa en mí'.

OR decrypt/cryptanalysts BUT this sounds too clinical.

I actually like "fathom out" for the first word, but can't find a suitable noun. You could of course depart from using the same stem, and opt for something like"fathom out" and "decipherers od "code-breakers"...
