there's more to it than meets the eye Explanation: I can't help it but reply to this. I was one of the people answering the dentist question. I did not use an Umlaut for several and which I think good reasons none of which were supposed to come across as an apology, rather an explanation: 1.Umlaute do get jumbled across the Internet and you never know how they arrive on the other end due to server and router software in the middle. Thus, as of this moment in time, it's more prudent to spell them out to reach a wider audience. 2.Some people are not familiar with making Umlauts using convoluted, 'geeky' methods like using ALT and some obtuse number some may have to look up in an HTML programming book for lack of other means. 3.Some people access the web using text-based web browsers or non-compliant web browsers, so Umlaute are not an option for them. 4.Not all people use Windows or PCs, so their method or chance to type Umlaute varies greatly, e.g. on a Mac it's actually typing option-u (for Umlaut) and then the vowel that needs dots over it. Let's be a little more understanding, thanks. |

I think what is proposed by the asker is wrong. Explanation: For typing ä you have to press alt 0228 Ä you have to press alt 0196 ö you have to press alt 0246 Ö you have to press alt 0214 ü you have to press alt 0252 Ü you have to press alt 0220 ß you have to press alt 0223 All this is done with Num lock on. The best way to it is however by creating macros for all these extra symbols. For how to create macros, see the help of the relevant software. |

Take it easy Explanation: On my PC qwerty keyboard, I just hold down the shift-key then type " and next the vowel. Eszet is available via the combination CTRL-ALT-S. Also, Word has a special character table and its own abbreviation for ß: CTRL-[. Aber warum einfach, wenn's auch kompliziert geht ... |

use the right software Explanation: It is much easier still, if your software allows you to switch between different keyboards. What I do (in Windows)is just to klick on the keyboard layout symbol and then "DE German (Standard)". Now my QWERTY keyboard reacts just the same as if it were a QWERTZ one, i.e. if I hit the "Y" key, "Z" is typed, if I hit ";", "ö" is typed, etc. All you need to know is, where the individual keys are on a German keyboard and you can forget about "Alt", "Num Lock" etc. |
