Medical - Medical (general) / spread of bacteria
French term or phrase: champ intestinal
I am translating a report on the spread of bacteria in hospital, and the section I am working on is titled: "Good Practices for Use of Antibiotics."

This is the sentence:

My attempted translation:
However, it would seems that department memos and meetings of the hospital prevention team and its doctors are necessary to remind them that the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics leaves the door open to the spread of Clostridium difficile which then overruns the ... of the already-weakened patient.

GDT suggests "intestinal drape" which does not make sense to me, since it seems the text is referring to part of the patient, not something placed in them. Any suggestions?

intestinal tract
Explanation:
I agree that "drape" doesn't fit in this context, nor does "field"; it seems to me they just mean the patient's intestine.
