Not sure who the target of your comment is, but personally I saw to violation of the Law and Order here.
On the other hand, being the Asker on this one, I should have closed it a while ago, but the problem is that this was a classic example of "garbage in garbage out", since the text in parenthesis was totally unnecessary in the source text. It added no value, just confusion; therefore, I went with something similar to Fernsuch't version. Too bad Piotrnikitin' reply came after my deadline, because it made the most sense.

Dear colleagues, please keep to the Rules for answering and making peer comments. I'd like to remind you some of them:
3.4 The only acceptable means of commenting on another's answer is by using the peer comment feature. Using the discussion area, the answer posting form or the answer explanation box to comment on another's suggestions is not allowed.
3.5 A peer comment must be based on linguistic evaluations of the answer. These linguistic considerations must be provided in the case of a disagree or neutral comment. Personal comments are not allowed in peer comments. Backing up peer comments with references, in general, is encouraged.
All the discussion entries that break the site rules will be removed.

Rachel's example works because there is a way to leave out the "not only" part => "X is designed not so much for two people, as for 5" still makes sense, although it conveys a different meaning than asker's phrase.
Now let's leave out the "not only" in asker's example =>
"... can participate not so much, ?but? 5, 20, 100, etc?" Does it make sense to you? Not "how much" participants? It might work only in Chinglish, I guess
