A man talks about his career as a professional rugby player.

Sentence: he was almost apologetic as he described how he only played first grade "off the bench".

Il jouait en premier niveau et n'était qu'un joueur / pilier remplaçant ?

I know absolutely nothing about rugby rules or positions. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Concernant les suggestions, il faudra dire "et était sur le banc (des remplaçants". C'est pourquoi j'ai proposé "en tant que remplaçant car on peut garder "jouer".
