German term or phrase: untersemestrig
In a description of how examination protocols at a German university have adapted to pandemic-related requirements:

Would this just be "examinations within the semester" (as opposed to end-of-term exams)? Or is there a specific term in English? (for a US target audience)

midterm exams
Explanation:

A midterm exam, is an exam given near the middle of an academic grading term, or near the middle of any given quarter or semester. Midterm exams are a type of formative assessment, to measure students' grasp of the course materials and identify areas that need work. Midterm exams may also be used for summative assessment to contribute to final grades. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midterm_exam

Explanation:
Untersemestrig means throughout the semester or term, not specifically in or around the midpoint.
