school-leaving examination project Explanation: We have gymnasiums in Hungary. I provide you the official translation, according to that the former "maturity" examination shall be translated "school-leaving examination" since the EU. Based on this, I offer you the solution "school-leaving examination project". (I am a former secondary school teacher and sworn translator in another language pair.) Diploma project OR Senior project/Final year project Explanation: Terms related to school systems can sometimes be a bit of a headache. Do you translate the term (unidiomatically) within the context of the foreign school system or find the natural and closest equivalent in a comparable school system in an English-speaking country? It obviously depends, but it sounds like the first option applies in your case. To answer your first question, in US English, you receive a 'high school diploma', which means your suggestion of 'diploma project' would work just fine in this context. It comes across as very neutral, and I think any person would understand what you meant without an issue. That said, a more idiomatic translation/equivalent (which conforms to the American school system) would be 'final year project' or 'senior project' ('senior' referring to a fourth (and final) year high school student). American public schools don't normally have a 'gymnasiearbete' as a requirement for graduation, but I'm sure there are some private schools that do. Obviously, I am only speaking to the Swedish and American school systems. I can't speak for the UK, Australia, etc. |
