To assess a model means to assess its quality. For this, one needs to run the model and check how well the model fits experimental data in some range of independent variables. In this regard, in the cited fragment, Оценки модели показали means that the authors run the model several times using different sets of independent variables. This is indicated by plural of Оценки. There can be only one assessment, but many runs, of a model using different independent variable sets. On the basis of these runs, one can evaluate if the model quality is excellent (it fits good the experimental data in the whole range of independent variables) or poor (there are significant differences between experimental and calculated data). Regarding улучшило её оценку, I think this is a mistake because it is possible to improve a model (its quality), while улучшить оценку looks like a situation where a student knows the correct answer and tries to ‘improve’ his answer instead of improving the solution.
