Tekst źródłowy - arabski Cairo -- An unusual name graced the pages of The Wall Street Journal’s Opinion section on 19 June 2009. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak penned an op-ed for the paper, outlining how peace might finally be reached between Palestinians and Israelis and Egypt’s role in fostering a comprehensive plan.
Just two days before Mubarak was scheduled to meet with Israel’s Defense Minister Ehud Barak on 21 June, the Egyptian President took to the opinion section to praise US President Barak Obama’s seminal speech in Cairo on 4 June. He said that his counterpart’s “ambitious agenda” for a lasting peace plan in the region “must now be followed by forward-looking steps in order to chart a new course” in the relationship between the US and Arab and Muslim world.
Mubarak spoke of Egypt’s leadership as a regional peace broker between Palestinians and Israelis and said that it was now time for the broader Arab region to work collectively towards a solution.
“A historic settlement is within reach, one that would give the Palestinians their state […] while granting Israel recognition and security to live in peace,” Gulf News reported on 20 June. “With President Obama’s reassertion of US leadership in the region, a rare moment of opportunity presents itself. Egypt stands ready to seize that moment, and I am confident that the Arab world will do the same,” Mubarak wrote in The Wall Street Journal.
Already following through on his verbal commitment to spearheading a peace movement in the region, Mubarak met with Ehud Barak on 21 June. The two discussed “efforts to revive the peace process in the Middle East, the situation in the Palestinian territories and efforts by Egypt to kickstart serious negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides” an official at the MENA news agency reported the same day.
Egypt was the first Arab state to make peace with Israel; they have had diplomatic relations since 1979, the Agence France-Presse reported on 21 June. Both Mubarak and Barak acknowledged that the meeting, as well as subsequent discussions between Israeli and Egyptian officials following Obama’s speech, was a major step in the right direction.
