Tekst źródłowy - angielski His plays can be pretty demanding too. I have rarely known my admittedly limited intelligence to be so seriously stretched in a theatre as it was during Copenhagen, a superb piece about nuclear physics, Heisenberg and his uncertainty principle, and the mysteries of human motivation.
What was remarkable was that Frayn turned such daunting material into a popular West End hit, with audiences evidently relishing the subtlety and complexity of the writing.
What's endearing about Frayn, though, is that his serious side is combined with a love of levity and laughter. His brilliant farce about a farce, Noises Off, is I think the funniest show I have ever seen, with the earlier hit, Donkeys' Years, about an Oxbridge college reunion, not far behind.
In this collection of essays about his life and work in the theatre, the apparently fastidious Frayn confesses to a healthy streak of vulgarity. As a child, he was a disastrously incompetent amateur conjuror, and he often popped in to watch the show at his local music hall on his way home from Kingston Grammar.
'I remember girls with incredibly long legs riding on chromium-plated monocycles, and edging cautiously about the stage balanced on top of a huge ball faced with a thousand mirrors, that sent the beam of the follow-spot cascading out in a blinding silver spray right to the back of the pit, where I was sitting. I wish I could write a play that had even a suggestion of the perfect shininess of that chromium, or flashed even half as much light around the audience as those mirrors did.'
What he seems to love most about the theatre - as I do - are those moments when 'the unreasonable happens and you're not just amused - you're legless. Total intoxication with no after-effects except laughing again at the memory; a benediction as pure and surprising as spring.'
It was his failure to arouse such laughter when he wrote a dud revue for the Cambridge Footlights that put him off theatre for years, he admits. As a result he began his career as a dramatist relatively late in life - in his mid-thirties - which perhaps explains why he is still going strong now, in his mid-seventies, with a major new play about the Austrian director and producer Max Reinhardt opening this summer at the National Theatre.
Frayn has endured some sensational flops along the way (Look Look; Here), as well as hits, and I wish he had written a piece about how he coped with failure and found the courage to persevere.
And though there is much to enjoy and profit from here, not least his superbly perceptive and sympathetic writing about Chekhov, whose work he has translated with distinction, Stage Directions does strike me as a slightly disappointing and indeed surprisingly lazy book.
These fugitive articles, introductions to plays, and postscripts written to be read after seeing them, are excellent, but Frayn might have taken the trouble to offer freshly written capsule descriptions of the plots, characters and themes of the dramas he discusses for those who don't have the texts to hand and whose memories of the original productions have faded. And if you do have the texts on your shelves, there is little point in buying this book, since almost everything here is already in print in the play-texts.
I was also disappointed by the lack of photographs, whether of past productions, or such real-life characters as the German chancellor Willy Brandt and the spy who brought him down, as depicted in Democracy, or the scientists Nils Bohr and Werner Heisenberg who appear in Copenhagen. Indeed there is a slight whiff of take-the-money-and-run about this recycled collection which I would never have expected from so fastidious a writer.

"Pamiętam, jak dziewczyny o niewiarygodnie długich nogach ostrożnie podjeżdżały na chromowanych monocyklach do skraju sceny, która podwieszona była na ogromnej kuli wysadzanej tysiącem lusterek. Lusterka odbijały światło reflektora, kierując mgławicę oślepiających srebrzystych drobinek w stronę ostatnich rzędów parteru, gdzie siedziałem ja. Chciałbym móc napisać sztukę, która byłaby choćby marnym refleksem tego doskonałego chromowego blasku, taką, która zdołałaby rozjaśnić widownię choćby połową światła odbitego w tych lusterkach."
Tym, co – tak, jak ja – Frayn zdaje się kochać w teatrze najbardziej, są te chwile, gdy "wydarza się nonsens, który nie tylko bawi, ale wręcz odurza. Totalny odjazd bez efektów ubocznych, prócz tego, że na samo jego wspomnienie pęka się ze śmiechu. Błogosławieństwo tak czyste i niespodziewane, jak nadejście wiosny".
Przyznaje jednak, że kiedy sam stał się obiektem takiej wesołości po tym, jak napisał kompletnie poronioną rewię dla Cambridge Footlights, wcale nie było mu do śmiechu, a wydarzenie to na lata odsunęło go do teatru. W rezultacie rozpoczął karierę dramaturga relatywnie późno, bo sporo po trzydziestce, co być może tłumaczy, dlaczego teraz, po siedemdziesiątce, ze swą nową sztuką o austriackim reżyserze i mistrzu inscenizacji Maksie Reinhardtcie, która tego lata będzie mieć premierę w National Theatre, wciąż jest u szczytu popularności.
Frayn ma na swym koncie zarówno kilka spektakularnych klap ("Look Look" [Popatrz, popatrz], "Here" [Tutaj]) – jak i hitów. Życzyłbym sobie, aby napisał sztukę o tym, jak znosił niepowodzenia i gdzie znalazł siły, aby przetrwać.
"Stage Directions" tymczasem, we fragmentach przyjemna i dość pouczająca lektura (na szczególną uwagę zasługuje wyjątkowo wnikliwy i pełen życzliwości tekst o Czechowie, którego twórczość Frayn zresztą znakomicie przetłumaczył), w całości jest już pozycją z lekka rozczarowującą, żeby nie powiedzieć, że wręcz gnuśną.

Frayn mógł sobie jednak zadać nieco trudu, by sprezentować tym czytelnikom, którzy akurat nie mają pod ręką jego oryginalnych tekstów, a ich wspomnienia pierwotnych inscenizacji już się nieco zatarły, świeżo zredagowane opisy wątków, postaci i tematów omawianych utworów. Z kolei, jeśli ktoś jest w posiadaniu wspomnianych sztuk, nie ma potrzeby kupować tej książki, zważywszy że materiały w niej zawarte stanowią część wydań dramatycznych.
Rozczarował mnie także brak zdjęć, zarówno starszych produkcji teatralnych, jak i postaci z krwi i kości, takich, jak niemiecki kanclerz Willy Brandt i szpieg, który doprowadził go do upadku (o czym opowiada "Demokracja") czy też sportretowanych w "Kopenhadze" naukowców Nilsa Bohra i Wernera Heisenberga. W istocie, czuć w tej wysoko przetworzonej antologii lekki posmak chałtury, czego, po kim, jak po kim, ale po tak solidnym twórcy, jak Frayn, nigdy bym się nie spodziewał.

Tekst źródłowy - portugalski O Abanijeun é um grupo de tambor de crioula de taboca, formado por crianças e adolescentes da Casa Fanti Ashanti, tradicional comunidade de São Luís do Maranhão, que preserva há décadas manifestações culturais de matriz africana. O tambor de crioula de taboca (um tipo de bambu) é uma variante do tambor de crioula, bastante difundido no Maranhão e que agora começa a ganhar o país. Abanijeun significa “aquele que divide o prato com os outros”. Graças a esse trabalho, a tradição do tambor de crioula, que corria o risco de ser extinta, é passada a futuras gerações.
A Casa Fanti-Ashanti localiza-se no bairro do Cruzeiro do Anil, em São Luís, no estado do Maranhão, no Brasil. É uma casa de candomblé, da nação Jeje-Nagô, fundada em 1954, e dirigida pelo babalorixá Euclides Menezes Ferreira, (de Oxaguian c/Oxum) e Mãe Isabel de Xangô com Oxum.
A raiz é do Terreiro Obá Ogunté também conhecido como Sítio de Pai Adão - Nagô do Recife - liderado hoje por Manuel Papai e Maria das Dores já falecida, juntamente Pai Raminho de Oxossi.
Os Fantis e os Ashantis eram povos da antiga Costa do Ouro, na África, atual República do Gana. É uma Casa de Mina e Candomblé que mantém a tradição desde sua fundação.
Além dos rituais do Tambor de Mina, do Candomblé e das festas de Ogum, Oxossi, Obaluaiyê, Oxum, Oxalá, Nanã, Xangô, Oxumaré e Oyá, a Casa também realiza o Samba de Angola para os boiadeiros. Há também rituais ligados à pajelança, ao catolicismo popular (Espírito Santo) e ao folclore (como o boi de Corre Beirada e o Tambor de Taboca).
O terreiro é comandado por Tabajara, coadjuvado pelos encantados Juracema e Jaguarema que estão presentes em todas as atividades, exceto nos rituais de Candomblé, onde a entidade maior é Oxaguiam, dono da cabeça de pai Euclides, babalorixá do terreiro, que herdou seus conhecimentos religiosos de um antigo Tambor de Mina de São Luís - o Terreiro do Egito - fundado em 1864, por
uma africana de Kumasi-Gana, que funcionou até o final da década de 70. Euclides Menezes Ferreira é pioneiro em São Luís na prática do Candomblé.
