A client accidentally attached a MALTESE translation memory (Semitic language with Latin script, according to Wikipedia) to a mix of Russian and Ukrainian text (Slavic languages, Cyrillic scripts).
...and managed to calculate match discounts of about 1/3rd off.
WITHOUT EVEN HAVING THE SAME ALPHABET.

What CAT tool?
Some weighted wordcount-lowering box ticked, such as Homogeneity (MQ) or Internal fuzzy matches (Trados)?
In such case, it's not a flaw, it's a "feature": there are similar sentences in your Slavic text, and the "feature" discounts these fuzzies-to-be.
Example of source text, empty TM:
"Climate change doesn't exist.
Climate change does exist."
=>
"Feature" on: 4 (or 5) new words, 4 fuzzy words

But, again, the translation memory they used ISN'T EVEN THE SAME ALPHABET... how the heck did they manage to find discounts anyway?
And they were match discounts, not repetition discounts. Including random and unrelated 99's, an 80% that matched a Ukrainian psychiatric hospital to a European company with a totally different name, etc.

Turns out somebody decided to save their mixed Ukrainian and Russian translation memory as "Maltese" (presumably because they decided they'd never have any use for actual Maltese and didn't know how to create new translation memories).
But hell, it might as well have been genuine Maltese for all the (non)usefulness of that particular translation memory... not a single remotely useful or even mildly relevant match in there anyway.

All in all, I get the distinct feeling it was created by someone with zero knowledge of anything pertaining to Ukraine, Ukrainian, or Russian, who just heard that certain regions of Ukraine write in "mostly-Russian", randomly added a few very specific (and mostly irrelevant) technical TMs together, and called it a night. Pretty sure they forgot General Russian, for one.
