Explanation:
Just a couple of alternatives. "Terrible" has become so weakened that "Something terrible has happened" often means no more than that you forgot to save the changes in your document or you've been overlooked for promotion again. Of these suggestions, I like "horrific" best -- it seems to still retain connotations of terror.
