Hello everyone,

I had more or less finished designing my website and decided to do the link check, target browser check, validation etc. I got some really nice and long problem descriptions, like "In HTML 4.0, font is deprecated. It may become obsolete in the future versions, consider using style sheets instead" or "NOWRAP is not a valid value for norwap attribute in any of the currently used attributes. See the above warnings..." I will not bore you, there are loads of them.

Now the problem is these warning might be in Chinese for all the good they do to me. I have no idea what any of them mean and it would probably take me a few month to get solution for even one of them. I might be quite knowledgeable in software and Internet use, but when it comes to scripts, I feel like a total looser.
I used a free template from Internet, changed it a bit (inserted other Xara designed banner, added a couple buttons that's it) in Dreamweaver.
Does anybody have a solution for sad cases like mine? Maybe there is a site for dummies that spells out how to design a website? I do not honestly believe that all translators are capable of grasping the subtleties of cascading styles etc. At the same time having splashed out on some software recently I cannot afford to pay for a website design.
I would be grateful for any advice.

Cheers,
Burrell

As long as you use only HTML (and possibly CSS), which are only for formatting purposes and no programming languages, most of the usual short overviews should help you.

If you don't want to bother with tags at all and if you are not really interested in having the full control over your code, you could also use Word and other Office programs to produce HTML pages efficiently.

Hi Burrell:

I would suggest two books by Elizabeth Castro:

Creating a Web Page with HTML

http://www.cookwood.com/htmlvqj

and

HTML for the World Wide Web, Fifth Edition with XHTML and CSS: Visual QuickStart Guide

http://www.cookwood.com/html5ed

The first one is a short how-to book that guides you step by step in creating a (fairly simple) web site.

The second book goes into much more details about HTML, and cascading style sheets, but in a very clear and easily understandable way.
In my opinion it is the best book on HTML available for anybody who is not a professional Internet developer.
