no music while I'm working Jun 12, 2009

It would be distracting.
Furthermore, I use speech recognition software occasionally. Just imagine what the additional "input" from the sound system might do.

But more importantly:
what an impression would clients get of my professional attitude if I answer the phone and they hear music blaring in the background?
I guess they'd go for one of these options:
- she has nothing to work on, so she can't be good, so we won't give her our text either.

I guess they'd go for one of these options:
- she has nothing to work on, so she can't be good, so we won't give her our text either.
- she is working while listening to the radio, she can't be taking her job seriously, the translation won't be any good, we won't give her our text.

Or they don't mind the fact that I'm listening to music while working - but hate the particular kind of music and transfer that poor opinion to me and my work

Jazz Jun 12, 2009

Personally, I like listening to an American webradio called KCSM or to "PlayJazz UK", a radio I found on winamp, never disappointing and to Indian web radios (I love bhangra).

If I'm proofreading I don't listen to music, as I can't concentrate (unless it's pure instrumental).

Nice thread!

Francesca

Pop music from the radio Jun 12, 2009

I listen to "Los 40 Principales" basically pop/commercial music. I put the radio on another room so it's not too close to me and it doesn't distract me too much. Usually, I don't sing along, but somehow I learn all the songs they play. I guess part of my head is translating and another one is learning the music, so on weekends when we go out I can sing out loud all the hits in vogue

Classic music Jun 12, 2009

When I'm working I often listen music, and only classical music, since it helps me concentrate.
I prefere baroque period (eg. Bach).

This really hurt Penélope. I see that we will never be good friends if you listen to the "40 principales"... I think I will have to heal you with a massive shipment of Michael Jackson, The Jacksons, Janet Jackson, and Germain Jackson music!!

A good question Jun 12, 2009

It largely depends on the subject-matter.

I mostly listen to jazz and blues, and sometimes opera.

I sincerely recommend iTunes radio ( free to download) that has around 100 music categories with over 100 radio stations for each. Fantastic resource.

Hahahahahaha "Los 40 Principales" rulezzzzzz I like to know and be able to sing all the music they play when I am parting on Saturdays. I think we can still be friends... you can always say that you know someone that seems pretty nice even though she listens to that stupid music

How about Pepe Radio www.peperadio.es? Do you ever listen to it? You might like that one...

No idea... but you can surely ask them to play it. You can have one hour of your own music at a set day/hour. And "el día de los Oyentes" you can request some songs also.

Music Jun 12, 2009

I generally do not listen to music when I work, but when I want a bit of company, I tend to listen to metal (metallica!), pop, like oasis, rock (springsteen) or grunge (pearl jam, stone temple pilots and the likes).
As for radio stantions I love ram power 102.5 and virgin radio (mainly rock music),
Claudia

Normally classical Jun 12, 2009

I normally stream classicfm over the internet. I do have a large collection of classical music, its all on CD still, and I dont have the time to get up and change the CD.

A tip for people who want to listen to Metallica style things without words - check out Apocalyptica (if ive spelt it correctly!) They are a Scandanavian (sorry cant remember where specifically) band made up of four cellos. They have a lovely album where they play the music of Metallica. It is awesome! There othe

We have this lovely station, Radio Clásica, in Spain. Very varied music. I don't necessarily like everything, so when I don't, I play records (always Jacksons, or course).

Music when clients call Jun 12, 2009

Well obviously it's not good to have music blaring in the background when clients call. But you can always switch the music off before you answer the phone. Easy enough...
