Until not so very long ago, I had my own personal geek (for free). Now that he moved away, I must look for someone else (whom I will pay)
I am among the very low percentage of those who pay someone for this service...

Other than the most basic stuff like updating and backing up, I get someone who actually knows what they are doing, i. e. a professional. I don't do my own maintenance on my scooters either, not since Vespas went all 21st century. Plumbing, electrical maintenance/repairs and dentistry fall into the same category. I don't think I'd fancy trying to set a broken limb or administer my own hepatic chemoembolization either, come to think of it... BTW, in case anyone's intere... BTW, in case anyone's interested, the aforementioned treatment over the past couple of years appears to have worked and I've been taken off the transplant list, so it looks like the world will have to put up with my presence for a wee while longer. Heartfelt thanks go to all the people keeping others alive and shipshape on a daily basis against all odds at La Fe (public healthcare) hospital, Valencia, Spain.

Thus far I've been able to solve all problems that arose. Hopefully, it will stay this way. Regular maintenance, e.g. defragmentation, cache cleaning etc, are done while I'm reading my emails. It takes but a few mouse clicks to start the programs. To all ProZians who celebrate it: Have yourselves a Happy Easter!

I worked in IT for about 14 years before going full-time as a translator. So I do my own maintenance.

maintenance, is pretty much straight forward, it is (as always) just the time that is a problem.

I switch mine on, turn it off, yell at it frequently, hit it occasionally (is there a law against that yet?) - I don't know of anything else one can do except take them to the dump and throw them as far as possible.

Are we talking about troubleshooting? | Apr 25, 2011 |
Maintenance, as I see it, would be putting files in places where they can be found, making sure they are backed up, and installing and updating software. Printers have moving parts, so that's more like maintenance. They require new cartridges and paper jams need to be cleared. I do all of the above. But when it comes to those glitches when everything stops working, I can sometimes back my way out of them, but often I have to call on my wonderful tech.

I can assemble a computer and connect it to another computer. Put an operation system on the hard disk as well as office and other programmes. It is a pain in the .ss, when one computer breaks down. Loss of time repairing it.
