I have been using eyeglasses for years and I’m sure next time I visit my optometrist I will need to change my lenses…

I need glasses at all times, but I have a low prescription. In fact, I have friends with the same prescription who only wear glasses to drive. I find this perplexing. I have computer glasses too with a much weaker prescription than my normal glasses. My normal prescription is -1.75 and for the computer I can use anything between -0.50 and -1.25, all do the job nicely. My computer glasses are cheap and I don't have the costly anti-glare layer applied since in the past I have worn glasses with and without anti-glare and I can't tell the difference in terms of tired eyes.

In the not-too-distant future, I am hoping to have corrective surgery and I have been told that I will probably have to acquire a pair of glasses of +0.50 to use at the computer. Does anyone have any experience of this?

And I can't tolerate wearing lenses.

I got my eyes operated two years ago and I definitely recommend this small intervention to everybody!

First started wearing them after an eye test at the "médecine du travail" when holding down a stressful job as PM.

I was told to wear them all the time, but only felt the need when at the computer, reading and driving. Out of sheer vanity I only wear them when I really need to.

As a result of only sometimes wearing them, I get confused. I have trouble telling where things are, when I wear them I feel like I'm wading through the floor, it's that close, then if I don't

As a result of only sometimes wearing them, I get confused. I have trouble telling where things are, when I wear them I feel like I'm wading through the floor, it's that close, then if I don't I feel like a goddess flying about a foot above it. I no longer feel confident driving as a result but living in Paris that is not a problem.

No way would I ever put lenses in. I've translated a few brochures about how to clean them and so on and was horrified to learn of all the stuff needed to clean them and all the things that can go wrong. Too close for comfort.

I do not need either item for now, but for sure I would need in future if I go on translating. ( many time I get texts written very badly and my mom wonders how I am able to decipher them).

I only need them outdoors and while working on the computer/watching TV. On the contrary, if I'd try to read with my glasses on, my arms are not long enough to hold the document far away enough to read.

Indoors I try to keep the glasses off. It's said to strengthen the eyes.

I wear glasses all the time -- and my eyesight has worsened the past few month. Off to the opticians soon.

I would not recommend contact lenses when working in front of a computer.

Made small corrections -- having trouble reading the small letters on screen.

and my poor tired eyes need new glasses!

My eyesight has worsened since I started spending hours a day translating at the computer. Being over 50 doesn't help much either!

I'm thinking of sending my prescription to an online glasses shop, though their lenses seem to be all polycarbonate - not glass which is what I have now.

Not sure what to do. Might try these lenses once to see. Certainly much cheaper getting glasses from the UK (polycarbonate) than buying

Other than sunglasses, I do not need glasses. I am neither short- nor long-sighted...

I had to start wearing glasses when I was four (my right eye was -3.75 and my left eye also needed correcting), and I wore them for 20 years until I started wearing contact lenses, which I used for 10 years.

Nine years ago I got my eyes LASIKed and I've never looked back ('scuse the pun!). It's one of the best things I've ever done. (On a humorous note - I worked in an office building at the time and for the week following my eye surgery every two hours I had to disappear into the l

(On a humorous note - I worked in an office building at the time and for the week following my eye surgery every two hours I had to disappear into the lavatories to put eye drops in; I regularly came out sniffing and with red eyes - I'm sure anybody that didn't know me must have thought I had a drug habit!).

I might need to wear glasses again in a few years time, but even if that's the case I'll have had at least 10 years of my life without glasses or lenses!

Tatty - I've never heard of having to wear glasses for the computer after corrective surgery, but I suppose it can depend on different surgeons and operating techniques.

I wore contact lenses for many years, but now I'm back to regular glasses. Actually, it only bothers me when cooking because sauces and stews do tend to leave some of their tastiest particles on my glasses. For birdwatching, I simply fold down the rubber eyecups on the binoculars - no problem at all.

I was going to ask this too! Sep 7, 2013

I don't normally need to wear glasses, but after spending so much time in front of a computer working, my eyes are killing me. I stole my wife's reading glasses and they seem to be helping, but I look much sillier than I normally do.

I really don't know a lot about reading glasses. Is there a specific kind for reading/translation? Is there a certain strength that I should look for? Is there anything else that I should know or should look for?

I think there's an optometrist here in town, but I've never been to one and would really prefer not to spend a lot of money.

I wear glasses for distance and driving but take them off when reading or using the computer. I've worn glasses since the age of 5 or 6. Being somewhat myopic, my close vision without correction is perfect, and it has hardly changed at all throughout my life.
