C3PO Mar 21, 2007

How about C3PO, the robot from Star Wars? He was fluent in about 3 trillion languages and let's face it, a lot of people out there paying us, expect us to be like robots who can produce error-free, stylistically perfect-flowing pieces of work:)

How about this: Mar 21, 2007

Its very interesting to see that more than 60% of the voters prefer a bridge as a symbol.

How about having a translator image consulting a dictionary while working on a computer with a comic "speech bubble" pointing towards that translator and having a picture of any famous bridge at the background wall.

Yes, I agree! Personally I think that a lot of thinking would be needed in order to create a symbol that would be adequate for translation as a whole. Using a bridge sounds to me like using an orange to represent vitamin-manufacturers... probably too direct and concrete...

We should ask designers... Mar 21, 2007

If we asked the members of the "European Bolt, Screw and Nut Manufacturers Association" what would best represent their business... they'd probably come up with a screw and a nut nicely mating together, right? But is that what they want and would represent them nicely? Probably not...

Also appropriate for agencies as a visual metaphor for payment strategies.
Fun poll!

Bridge? Mar 21, 2007

That bridge is quite popular, getting 60% of the votes. While I can see why a bridge could be a symbol for translators, the same connecting feature goes for many other occupations that have nothing to do with translating. I can imagine communication consultants, telephone companies, psychologists, travel agencies and what have you use the bridge as a symbol. I feel it is not language specific enough to be a symbol for translators.

For now I am with the parrot.

A hand shake.

As a metaphor of hopefully good communication.

In Poland, a parrot (w/o being a symbol of the profession) is a bit offensive colloquial term for a lawyer suggesting they use many, many words without much sense to other people just like parrots.

Interesting... Mar 21, 2007

I'm finding this quite an interesting poll. It says as much about how each person VIEWS who we are and what we do as it does about who we ACTUALLY are and what we ACTUALLY do....

So far we've got bright, bubbly polyglots (parrot people), "stressed-out freaks", enthusiastic bridge-builders, hopeful castaways sending smoke signals to any passing ship, and obsessive compulsives with a pathological need to create order fr

(ideally a multilingual one) is at least my ideal symbol of being or becoming a translator since when I was a kid. I actually have a picture I took with an Albanian-English dictionary when I was still in Elementary school and I had my English teacher sign it on the back.

Bridge between books Mar 21, 2007

Great Poll. I like the bridge too. A bridge between 2 books maybe to serve all.

Or a ball and chain.

I voted for the speech bubble... Mar 21, 2007

... as I love comics (I'm Norwegian! ), but having read this thread, I'd definately go for the Rosetta Stone, especially as that would incorporate my interest for Ancient Egypt as well!

A chameleon Mar 21, 2007

My ideal as a translator is to convey the message my clients wants to transmit without the readers noticing that it was translated.
I really feel like a chameleon because I have to mimick my customers "colour" to do a good job - today I'm a chemistry teacher writing for students, tomorrow I'll be a road engineer and someday I'll be an archaeologist...
Each time it's different and I have to adapt to various environments, i.e. text fields, styles, target readers, etc. and that's what

I didn't know that the parrot was a symbol of translators, I learnt something interesting today thanks to this poll!
