I couldn’t stop worrying about what I’d seen when I’d looked out Merlotte’s window: a short figure running toward the building, holding something in one hand. I hadn’t been able to tell if the runner was a man or a woman, but one thing I was sure of: The runner was a supe, and I suspected he—or she—was a twoey. This suspicion gained more weight when I added in the speed and agility of the runner and the strength and accuracy of the throw—the bottle had come at the window harder than a human could have hurled it, with enough velocity to shatter the window.
I couldn’t be 100 percent sure. But vampires don’t like to handle fire. Something about the vampire condition causes them to be extra flammable. It would take a very confident, or very reckless, fanger to use a Molotov cocktail as a weapon.
For that reason alone, I was inclined to put my money on the bomber being a twoey — a shapeshifter or were of some variety. Of course, there were other sorts of supernatural creatures like elves and fairies and goblins, and they were all quicker than humans. To my regret, the whole incident had happened too swiftly for me to scope out the bomber’s mind. That would have been decisive, because vampires are a big blank to me, a hole in the aether, and I also can’t read fairies, though they register differently. Nie mogłam wybić sobie z głowy postaci, którą zobaczyłam za oknem Merlotte’a: ktoś niski biegł w stronę baru, trzymając coś w ręku. Nie jestem w stanie powiedzieć,
czy był to mężczyzna czy kobieta, ale jestem pewna, że była to istota spoza tego świata. Podejrzewałam, że mógł to być dwu–jaki. Do takich podejrzeń skłonił mnie fakt, że napastnik był szybki i zręczny, silny i dokładny. Butelka została rzucona z siłą o wiele większą od ludzkiej i o wystarczającej mocy by roztrzaskać okno.
Nie mogę być jednak pewna na sto procent, ale z tego co wiem, to wampiry nie lubią ognia. Wampirze schorzenie powoduje, że są łatwopalni. Wpijacz, który użyłby koktajlu Mołotowa jako broni, musiałby być albo bardzo odważny, albo bardzo lekkomyślny.
Dlatego też, mogłabym się założyć, że zamachowcem był dwu–jaki; zmiennokształtny lub jakiś łakowaty. Oczywiście jest dużo więcej stworzeń nadnaturalnych, na przykład: elfy, wróżki czy gobliny, które są dużo szybsze od ludzi. Niestety wszystko potoczyło się tak szybko, że nie zdążyłam nawet przeglądnąć umysłu napastnika. To na pewno pomogłoby w jego rozpoznaniu, bo wampirze umysły są dla mnie czarną dziurą, tak samo jak wróżek, chociaż te drugie dają mi odczucie inności. Umysły niektórych dwu–jakich potrafię czytać z łatwością, a niektórych wcale, tak ogólnie, to odczytuję je jako ciepłe i wiecznie zajęte. […]

COSTELLO comes in. The shop is one that sells papers, sundries, fountain drinks...and fronts a bookie operation.

Won’t happen again, Mr.C.
The frightened proprietor hands over money. Fifty bucks, a hundred, doesn't matter. COSTELLO is never the threatener. His demeanor is gentle, philosophical. Almost a shrink's probing bedside manner. He has great interest in the world as he moves through it. As if he originally came from a
different world and his survival in this one depends on close continual observation and analysis.

The only thing left of the pelvis was the thick, chunky part that had formed a joint with the sacrum. No gender-specific feature remained.
“The muscle attachments are robust. I’d give it a qualified ‘male,’ and that’s probably the best I’ll be able to do. Nothing’s complete enough for measurement.”
I picked up and rotated the heel bone. A small, circular defect caught my eye. Jake noticed my interest.
“What?”
I pointed at the tiny tunnel on the outer side of the bone. “That’s not natural.”
“What do you mean, not natural?” Jake asked.
“It’s not supposed to be there.”
Jake repeated his come-on gesture, more impatient than before.
“It’s not a foramen for a vessel or nerve. The bone’s badly abraded, but, from what I can see, the hole’s edges are sharp, not smooth.”
I lay down the calcaneus and handed Jake the glass. He bent and brought the midpart of the bone into focus.
“What do you think it is?” Ryan asked.
Before I could answer, Jake shot into the map room. Drawers opened and slammed, then he
reappeared, flipping through stapled pages.
Slapping the pages onto the counter, Jake jabbed a finger at one.
I looked down.
Jake was pointing at an article titled “Anthropological Observations on the Skeletal Remains from Giv’at ha-Mivtar.” His finger was on a page of photographs. Much detail had been lost in the photocopy process, but the subject was obvious. […]

Zbadałam odłam kości potylicznej. Grzebień potyliczny czaszki nie za bardzo się wyróżniał. To samo tyczyło się kresy chropawej na niektórych odłamkach trzonu kości udowej. Jedyną pozostałością po miednicy była gruba, przysadzista część kości, która utworzyła łącze z kością krzyżową. Nic, co mogłoby wskazywać na płeć.
- Przyczepy mięśni są mocne, więc obstawiałabym, że to mężczyzna. Tylko tyle mogę powiedzieć. Żadna z kości nie jest w całości, więc nie ma jak zrobić pomiarów.
Obracając w ręku kość piętową, zauważyłam malutki, okrągły ubytek. Jake dostrzegł moje zainteresowanie.
- Co?
Wskazałam na maleńki tunel po zewnętrznej części kości.
- Ten ubytek nie jest naturalny.
- Co masz na myśli mówiąc, że nie jest naturalny? - zapytał Jake.
- Tego nie powinno tu być.
Jake znów ponaglił mnie swoim gestem, ale tym razem był bardziej niecierpliwy.
- Nie jest to otwór ani na naczynie, ani na nerw. Kość jest otarta, ale z tego co widzę, to krawędzie ubytku są ostre, a nie gładkie.
Odłożyłam kość piętową i podałam Jake’owi szkło powiększające. Schylił się i ustawił ostrość na środkową część kości.
- Jak myślisz, co to jest? - spytał Ryan.
Zanim zdążyłam odpowiedzieć, Jake wystrzelił jak z procy do pokoju z mapami. Szuflady strzelały i trzaskały, aż wreszcie pojawił się wertując nerwowo spięte kartki papieru.
Rzucając je na blat, wskazał na jedną z nich palcem.
Popatrzyłam w dół.

I am one of the first translators to complete the newly opened postgraduate course at City University, London; MA Translating Popular Culture. My specialisation is based on a year of intensive, practical work, which included translations of children picture books, comic books, literary texts (fantasy, sci-fi and crime fiction in particular), audio-visual translations (voice-over, dubbing and subtitling) and translations of movie scripts. While studying, I had an opportunity to learn from the best writers and translators in the industry, which gave me valuable experience working in the environment of a translator and prepared me to work under pressure and within a busy schedule. At Westminster University, I studied the language from its core (history of English language starting from Old English) to its recent developments in Great Britain and the rest of the English speaking world. For my own benefit, I also took extra classes in Shakespeare's language and creative writing, which provided me with essential skills to create translations of the highest quality.
