Polish to English: The Year of Janusz Korczak – ideas and assumptions. Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy

The Year of Janusz Korczak – ideas and assumptions.
In 2012 is the 70th anniversary of the tragic death of Janusz Korczak and his wards in a Nazi extermination camp in Treblinka. The same year marks the centenary of his establishment of the House of Orphans in Warsaw on Krochmalna Street. This place became a unique education centre, a place of specific education experiments. There Korczak – a brilliant educator, writer and philosopher - developed his pedagogical concepts, his philosophy of childhood and of pedagogical relation with a child. In this place, Korczak’s writings recorded his pedagogical thoughts. They came to enchant the whole world, albeit years after creating them. The House of Orphans was the place where Korczak’s way of thinking about a child was born. It is a way of thinking that we are trying, but are not yet mature enough to implement.
Taking both anniversaries into consideration, on the initiative of the Ombudsman for Children, the Polish Parliament announced the year 2012 to be the Year of Janusz Korczak. Above all, this gesture was made out of respect for the pedagogical, moral and intellectual authority of Janusz Korczak, as well as the respect paid in many countries to this unique person. In its resolution of 16 September 2011, the Parliament of the Republic of Poland emphasized that the year was to be devoted to Janusz Korczak in order to pay homage to a world-famous precursor of the idea of respecting children’s rights. He also promoted and put into practice the concept of honouring children’s interests and emancipation and the principle of their capacity for making their own decisions. As a result of efforts of the Ombudsman for Children and the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the concept of 2012 as a Year of Janusz Korczak, became an international idea.
The Year of Janusz Korczak has assumed great national and international significance in providing awareness of his brilliant and unique biography. Most of all, it was supposed to be a tribute to Janusz Korczak’s legacy. It was announced as a great programme of social education aimed at adults and children, various organizations, social and professional groups, the world of politics, the media and schools. But most of all, it was aimed at families and parents. By getting to know Janusz Korczak’s philosophy and pedagogy we learn how to love, respect and bring our children up, as well as to develop relationships that will enable them to “spread their wings” and use their potential.
By celebrating the Year of Korczak we want to learn from him how to treat our children in their social environment, what place should be granted to them in society; we want to learn from him to see them as fellow citizens, co-creators of the present and future world.
