I posted this question for English-Chinese pair and found that answerers had different understanding of "function display". Not knowing what it really is, I have a hard time choosing the right answer. Would like to know the meaning of "function display". Thanks!

disagree  Tony M: I think this misses the context; clearly the curtains/drapery bit was a red herring!

explanation provided below

Explanation:
One use of the word function is that of event. For example, one might ask: "What function are you attending?" or "Which of the functions did you find most interesting". Based on the context you have provided a "function display" is a display designed for a specific function -- say, a wedding, a dance, a trade conference, an awards banquet, etc.

mounted promotional displays for events such as conferences and promotions

Explanation:
A function, such as the Export Institute Annual Conference, might have its own 'displays' = several screens, booths, stands etc about the Institute which the conference participants can walk up to and look at.

Or the function might invite members and sponsors etc to mount their own displays - again publicity material mounted on screens etc. People can walk around them and look at them.

Other places you see displays are in supermarkets, where there are merchandise displays, maybe at the end of the aisle, for shoppers to look at. It is a form of promotion - called a point of sale display.

Shops or department stores sometimes put a special display in their window on a theme, say. For example, autumn fashions.

I hope this gives enough examples of 'display' (noun) in context. A whole display is reasonably big so people can walk up to it and view it. There are companies which specialise in making displays (eg our telephone book's Yellow Pages has a section 'display designers - manufacture and supply') The items in the displays are described there as eg 'point of sale units, counters, slat panel, shopfitting', 'Hirequip Party and Events: for display panels, folding tables, conference and display equipment', 'Standeasy portable banner displays: tradeshows, expos, conferences, promos, presentations' 'point of sale products and merchandising accessories'...
