Who hasn´t?
It is all a part of the job. Even friends of mine that have regular jobs get into trouble for working too much, but then that is life.
She does get back down to a normal level pretty quickly though and it does help that talk to each other every now and then;-)

First, define "problems"... then we can work on the definition of "too much"...

I cannot even imagine how a sensible and diligent specialist as a breadwinner who can prioritize and manage parallel tasks and events could get into trouble, especially with the family.

The only exception may be WHAT he is working on too much--does idling count?)

I don't work too much. 30 hours a week is plenty. I don't actually need a bigger car/new kitchen/another bit on the side.

Life is for living.

I’m a widow and when my children were still at home they knew quite well what my work meant...

My hours are probably closer to 36 a week but no more. Evenings, weekends and vacations are for spending with my friends and family, or for playing sports or other hobbies.

problems is a big word May 11, 2017

We discussed about the fact that sometimes I do not say no to some clients.
Well if you have a client who pays your invoice 3 hours after you send it you try to accommodate his requests (never imposed), or if you have a client who is willing too pay something like 50% more of your average clients, you try to to find a moment for them...

yes... May 11, 2017

But the problems were when I was an employee at a company with a stupid "we never say no" slogan. Once I started free-lancing, I could be my own boss and I've always made sure of keeping free time when my partner is around. It helps that I wake early and he doesn't, I can get all sorts of bits and pieces out of the way before he's up.

Untimely work can cause problems May 11, 2017

Exactly! I well remember our rat-race commuting existence in the suburbs of London, where we had two massive salaries coming in and so many "things" to spend the money on, but so little time to enjoy it all. Nowadays we're far more careful with our time.

On average, I don't work too much at all, but there are always peaks and troughs in freelancing. Sometimes it all comes at once and I'm sure we all take on more than we should in preference to disappointing a regular client. It's pretty inevitable on occasions and it can cause "family problems", aka in my case a fed-up hubby. But it only lasts a few days before I get my priorities sorted out and start smoothing those ruffled feathers.

My wife never got angry about this, but I can tell that she is sometimes more than upset because me working at night or even during vacations.

But then I have the possibility to "punch the time clock" in the early evening and take care of my son or jump in in case of emergency, and she told me that she is more than happy about that. In other families where both have are employed fathers are not able to spend so much time with their children, so I think she can accept the downsides.

My wife... May 11, 2017

Yes, I had a really hard time with my wife in the beginning, above all when SHE was unemployed, and wanted a lot of attention. Later on, she realized my work is what allows her to do and buy all her things, and she even said she was sorry for being so demanding earlier. Soon she'll finish her Law course, and we'll see who will complain, ha ha!

This is indeed one of the most stupid slogans ever invented. One thing we take some time to learn in this life is when and how to say "no", as it is absolutely essential, and makes your life a lot better. This company probably went bankrupt.
