I see that Zweitausendeins is now selling this De-De dico on CD-ROMs for 49.90 Euro.
As the last paper volume was completed in 1961, I wonder how modern and complete (especially with technical terms) is the vocabulary in this CDROM version.
Do you know, or even have personal experience of it?
(It's also available as a paperback in 33 volumes for 499 Euro.)
Oliver

online version of Grimms deutsches Wörterbuch May 10, 2005

There is a free online version of the dictionary: http://www.dwb.uni-trier.de/
Have a look for details. I think the content is about the same, but the design is different on CD-ROM.

Try it out! May 11, 2005

As Manuel said: try it out: My experience of it is, that it is totally a history of the German Language than an up-to-date dictionary. You certainly will not find any Internet-content but lots and lots of hints how words came into being and where they were mentioned.

Does this site permit use of the dictionary? May 11, 2005

Maybe I'm missing something, but where on the site can I access the dictionary - or is the site just about the dictionary project?

Thanks

Linda

Grimms is a historical document May 11, 2005

Hi,

I think you're missing the point on the Grimms Wörterbuch. It is not at all intended to be a current dictionary, but rather serves as a historical document for scholars looking to understand the inflections and etymologies of the German language as it existed in the days when the Brothers Grimm lived. As such, it is magnificent. But for a daily translation aid for a technical translator, look elsewhere.

Hope this helps!

Steven

Hi Linda,

Thank you Manuel, I actually have the paperback, but it is not easy to use, small print, big... The internet edition is much easier.

Sincerely

Linda

Thanks for the comment, Steven. I think I was only partly missing the point as I already suspected that it did not have late 20th-century words. You have confirmed this, and I can make a more informed decision about whether to obtain a copy. (I'll also have a look at the on-line version if it's really available; I haven't checked yet.)

Oliver
