translate trados studio 2009 files with wfc

hey folks,

anybody know of a way to translate trados studio 2009 files with wfc??
any conversion/pass-through programs etc. would be ok.
wfc and trados studio 2009 are available, I'm just looking for a way to maybe prepare the trados studio 2009 files first in trados studio 2009, somehow export/convert into wfc-able format, translate with wfc, then convert/import back to trados studio 2009, do any post-editing, and then deliver from within trados studio 2009.

By "trados studio 2009" files, I assume you mean SDLXLIFF files. You should be able to open them in Wordfast Pro, as explained in http://www.wordfast.net/?kb=163-35

If you manage to open them in the current version of Wordfast Pro (2.4.4), you should be able to translate them in Wordfast Classic, using Wordfast Pro 3.0 (when it becomes available).

Dear Dominique,

thanks for the link - appears to be just the thing I need, but...

it stops being working for me at step 3 - there seems to be no [...] button to browser for the "Conversion rules" (*.properties).
I have wf pro 6, not wf 6 pro plus - does this work only for pro plus?

No need for Pro Plus, it should work in Pro standard, as shown here:

The knowledge-base article clearly states that this method is ONLY for "standard XLF files" which excludes any "adapted native" formats such as that of SDLXLIFF.

Actually, I opened the PPTX used in my WFP3 video in Studio 2011, and I copied everything from source to target. I got something looking like this:



I then opened the SDLXLIFF file in WFP3 using the standard XLF filter, and it looked like this in WFP3:



Looked quite good as far as I could see. Your disclaimer may very well be justified, but Omer may want to give it a try with a sample SDLXLIFF of his own. I believe it should work well if the SDLXLIFF is not populated with actual translations. In other words, the SDLXLIFF should be pre-segmented with the source column duplicated to into the target column.

I work on a Mac, and I cannot get any newer version than Wordfast 2.4.1, so perhaps this is what causes the problem?

I can follow the steps to creating a new format up to the point where I should change the extension - it says *.xml by default, and although I can overwrite it, it simply jumps back to *.xml when I leave the settings page.

Why is that?

And could you also please clarify - should I first copy all source to target using Studio before attempting ... See more

so when you say "I cannot get any newer version than Wordfast 2.4.1", do you mean you cannot download it from that page? Sometimes, the server hosting Wordfast Pro install files can be painfully slow.

Yes, the target column of your SDLXLIFF must be populated in Studio before you attempt to open it in Wordfast Pro. What Wordfast Pro is actually importing into its editor is the target column of the SDLXLIFF. When you select 'Save Translated File' at the end, you will obtain a bilingual SDLXLIFF with source texts in the source column and their translations in the target column. At least it's the way it should appear when you open it in Studio.
