Hi,

Is it possible to create a Wordfast Classic glossary without using Wordfast itself?
I am a translator and I have a text to translate which uses very, very specific and unique words (many archaic and not available in modern dictionaries).

Hi,

Is it possible to create a Wordfast Classic glossary without using Wordfast itself?
I am a translator and I have a text to translate which uses very, very specific and unique words (many archaic and not available in modern dictionaries).
I have created a word list of every individual word used in the text and so now I need some help from a native speaker of the source language to research and find the target language translation of each word (a process which for me would take forever)
From the document that they create I then plan to use as a glossary for when I translate the text using Wordfast Classic.

Is there a way to create such a glossary document without the use of Wordfast - as my prospective assistant does not have the software or experience.

Thanks for any help/advice.

As far as I know, it's a very simple task.
Just create a text document (.txt) with Noteapad or similar tool where one column is for the source terms and second nearby column is for the translations, both columns should be separated by a TAB.

Or create a Word table with your usual source, target and comments columns and then transfer the columns to an existing (or new) Wordfast glossary) when you're ready - they will then be in the tab-delimited format required for Wordfast.

Excel Dec 14, 2012

Excel is my preferred option because it allows easy reorganisation of data alphabetically on either source or target and filling in the appropriate fields and comments placeholders. I create an empty glossary in Wordfast using the field and comments placeholders I want and then open it in Excel. Just ensure you then save it in tab-delimited format.

Thank you all for your comments.

I have another question: is there a limit on the number of glossary terms/words when using Wordfast Classic demo version?

No, there is no limit specific to the demo version. In other words, you can have as many entries as when running in full version mode. There is a limit, I think it's something like 250,000 entries.
