The type of handpump technology suitable for a particular area depends on the groundwater level, water quality and hydrogeological conditions. Arsenic safe groundwater is generally found in shallow aquifers in north-western region, and in pockets/strata in arsenic contaminated areas where conventional shallow tubewells are producing arsenic-safe water. Deep aquifers separated from shallow contaminated aquifers by impermeable layers can be a dependable source of arsenic safe water. Do wyboru są trzy rodzaje studni:


abisynka
(studnia abisyńska, studnia wkręcana)

Wykonywana przez wkręcanie w grunt rury zakończonej stożkowatym ostrzem. Pobieranie wody następuje przez pompowanie ręczną dźwignią, co powoduje ruch tłoka i podniesienie słupa wody. Może pobierać wodę z głębokości 3-7 m (do ujmowania wody zaskórnej lub gruntowej).


studnia kopana (kręgowa)

Zwykle zbudowana z kręgów betonowych, wykopana ręcznie lub za pomocą narzędzi. Ze względu na technologię wykonania nie jest zbyt głęboka i pobiera wodę z pierwszej, najpłytszej warstwy wodonośnej (do ujmowania wody gruntowej)


studnia wiercona (głębinowa)

Powstała w wyniku wiercenia ręcznego lub mechanicznego i wydobycia materiału skalnego za pomocą świdra. Sięga do głębszych warstw wodonośnych najczęściej przykrytych co najmniej jedną warstwą nieprzepuszczalną (do ujmowania wody gruntowej lub wgłębnej).
