Today my Skype access went AWOL.
Windows Action Centre suggested an update and I downloaded it from the Skype site. I immediately received the notification of a test message my wife had sent me (hers is still working and is linked to the same router) but it immediately crashed again (system tray icon disappeared). When I open Skype I get a message on the page: "Skype Home not available at present. Please try again later" and then a dialogue box saying: "Skype has stopped working".... See more

Viruses
Feb 28, 2012
Thanks Amurati
McAfee carried out a scheduled scan 5 hours ago and found no viruses or spyware.
Following the Skype Heartbeat advice, I deleted all traces of Skype, including nearly 100 registry items, changed my password, rebooted and downloaded Skype again.
It has not solved the problem.

Skype Uninstall tool

This is just a shot in the dark. Have you tried uninstalling Skype using an Skype uninstall tool? I ask because Skype seems to lodge itself in your system. I had problems with a message I couldn't delete on two of my machines. I tried uninstalling and re-installing Skype via the Control Panel yet this message lingered on (still does to this day) and kept on popping up to notify me it was there (it's very annoying). Recently I bought a new computer downloaded Skype and it's fine so the problem wasn't with my account per se, the issue had just lodged itself in my system. Perhaps a Skype removal tool might do the trick? ▲ Collapse

could be the reason. I use the same antivirus app too and had a similar problem. For Skype you need to allow a full access to Internet in the McAfee settings.

I tried a Skype Uninstall tool but that didn't work either.
In desperation I asked a specialist company, who checked everything remotely - at a cost!
It was Malware that had somehow bypassed McAfee.
