Ano dlatego, że wtedy ustaliło się rozumienie pojęcia przedpłat, jako zbierania pieniędzy na coś, co będzie dostarczone do sprzedawcy po uzbieraniu pełnej sumy. Natomiast wszystkie przedstawione angielskie definicje wskazują na konieczność fizycznego posiadania przedmiotu sprzedaży przez sprzedawcę od początku okresu wpłacania rat ("the goods are kept [by] the seller until the full price is paid", "the seller keeps the goods untill full payment is made").

“How do layaway plans work?” The answer is quite simple. Layaway plans requrie that you make installment payments on the merchandise. You receive it only after you pay the full price. This plan is different than credit because when you buy on credit, you take the merchandise before you pay. Each store establishes the terms for their layaway plan. Most layaway plans involve making a deposit (usually a percentage of the purchase price), and paying the balance over a period of time until you have paid for the item in full. In return, the store retailer will hold your product until it is paid for.

Longman Business English Dictionary podaje: "a method of buying goods in which the buyer makes a first payment that is a percentage of a larger sum and the goods are kept the the seller until the full proce is paid". Najnowszy słownik Encarta Collegae Dictionary pisze: "a method of purchasing something in which the purchaser pays a deposit and the seller keeps the goods untill full payment is made. Z określeniem tym jest taki kłopot, że w czasach PRL-u na przedpłaty sprzedawano małe i duże fiaty, które to samochody nie czekały na nabywców na parkingach fabrycznych, lecz istniały jedynie w świecie "wirtualnym". Tak więc "sprzedaż na przedpłaty" kojarzy się ze sprzedażą czegoś, co zostanie wyprodukowane po spłaceniu wszystkich rat (a może i nigdy, gdyż wielu "przedpłatowiczów" nie doczekało się wymarzonych czterech kółek:-).
