=================
Rotors which are operated at overcritical speeds, often show big deflections during the passage through critical speeds. A device for limiting these deflections is a retainer bearing. A retainer bearing is an additional bearing with clearance, which has no effect during normal operating conditions. Yet, when the rotor deflections exceed the clearance, the rotor gets in contact with the retainer bearing and the vibrational properties of the coupled system change. After the critical speed range has been passed, rotor and retainer bearing need to separate again, so the rotor can operate with small amplitudes in the non-critical speed range

Replace (flanged) thrust washers (upper and lower), if their surfaces are worn excessively and/or the crankshaft end play exceeds recommended value
