Hi, I'm hoping someone who served in the military can enlighten me.
I'm translating detailed charts containing the order of battle of NATO air forces
and have encountered these two words plus крыло, which is obviously
the US (and perhaps other countries') "Wing".
I'm familiar with эскрадилья as "squadron" but what is эскадра in
an aviation context? Is it what some countries call their equivalents to a wing?

I'm familiar with эскрадилья as "squadron" but what is эскадра in
an aviation context? Is it what some countries call their equivalents to a wing?
Or is it a term for non-flying units such as SAM (the Military Encyclopedic
Dictionary of 1983 gives this defintion:

In the absence of broader context I'd speculate they mean the ships from the carrier battle group when they say эскадра. Эскадра самолетов is definitely not idiomatic Russian.

With all due respect, Zoya, эскадра in your reference is just a bad Russian translation of the original German term.

I noticed where the link Zoya provided said that an эскадра was equivalent to an авиаполк,
but elsewhere as a соединение, which would be division-level.
Yet, an эскадра is smaller than a крыло, which is smaller than an объединение

На простой вопрос "какая разница между..." есть простой ответ: разница в размере и численности. Эскадра больше эскадрильи. Так же, как sigara - больше и толще, чем sigarillo

Вдогонку к крайнему сообщению аскера: Эскадра скорее эквивалентна дивизии, чем полку. Для поиска точных соответствий поищите в интернете структуру Люфтваффе времен Второй мировой войны, у немцев (вроде бы, точно не помню) как раз были именно эскадры, а не дивизии.
Еще вдогонку. Есть система организации вооруженных сил: батальон -> полк -> дивизия -> армия, а есть: батальон -> бригада -> корпус -> армия. Аналогично в ВВС: есть
звено->эскадрилья->полк->дивизия->воздушная армия, а есть: эскадрилья->полк->эскадра.
